Single Parents Are Relating To This Mom’s Rant Over People Who Judge Her For Taking Her Kid Grocery Shopping
The coronavirus pandemic has brought out the best and the worst in people. Some individuals are quick to judge others for not following quarantine and social distancing rules without knowing their situations.
MaryAnn Fausey Resendez takes her 5-year-old daughter with her to go to the grocery store because she’s the only adult in her household and can’t leave her child alone.
She put a sign on her daughter’s back explaining just why she’s out and about with her mom to stop any criticism and shaming before it starts. The Texan mom’s post on Facebook got a lot of attention with over 5.1k comments and 43k shares.

Some social media users explained that they were in the same boat as MaryAnn, others pointed out that we all need to stop judging each other so harshly. There were also a few commentators who said that bringing children to grocery stores is potentially dangerous to them.
In some countries, there’s a rule or a recommendation that only one person from each family should go shopping. This means that single parents with nobody to look after their kids are now scrutinized by members of their community and neighbors when they go outside with their children in tow.

There are more single parents struggling with the coronavirus quarantine than you think. For example, in San Francisco, in California, nearly a quarter of all families with children are single-parent households; the number is over one third in Hidalgo County, in Texas, where MaryAnn lives.
So a lot of parents are out of their depth and face very real dilemmas in their day to day lives: do they leave their children at home, bring them along on trips to grocery stores, or potentially risk infecting their extended family members with the coronavirus by dropping the kids off at their place? At the end of the day, there’s no good answer and each decision has its downsides.
26-year-old startup founder and single mom Izabel Arnold is another example of someone stuck in a Catch-22 situation. Izabel told the San Francisco Chronicle that she feels completely overwhelmed and very lonely.
“I think other working single moms share the same sentiment—that we feel we’re failing at our jobs and at being moms because both require our full attention, but neither can have it,” she shared her struggles with finding balance in her life between paying the bills and raising her child.
Izabel stopped seeing her parents because she’s afraid of exposing them to the virus. Meanwhile, her child’s daycare is closed which means Izabel has to take care of son all by herself all day, every day.
Most people supported the MaryAnn’s message and urged others to stop shaming single parents

Share on FacebookTo all the morons yammering that she "should" let someone else watch the kids.....WTF are you talking about? Are you seriously telling this single mom that she should break quarantine, go to someone else's home, and risk her daughter's life so that she can buy food? You're idiots.
THANK YOU. The person who commented about 'banding together' to look after each other's children... NO! This is not what we're supposed to be doing. If mum and her child are the only people living together then she has few options.
Load More Replies...I think it's obvious we shouldn't judge people who are going to the stores with younger kids, it's possible they don't have other options. I do reserve the right to judge families with 2 able-bodied parents who go shopping with their 3 kids. What's their excuse?
BiEL Sampaio, yeah, I think someone has said something to her before, otherwise she wouldn't feel the need to glue notes to her kid. I hope)))
Load More Replies...Our shops: "Please don't make your daily shopping a family outing" People: "Let's go shopping, with Grandpa, Grandma, Melinda, Joey, Robin, aunty Wilma and the both of us."
What does that have to do with the article? The whole point is that she has to take her daughter with her.
Load More Replies...The parents that I get frustrated with are the ones who let their children run all over the store like it's a trip to Disney land. That's bs
Oh and to the person that said it might not be convenient but there is curbside pickup. how do you know that it is available where she lives? Guess what? It isn't available everywhere! and what if it was but she doesn't have a credit or debit card to pay? Or maybe she uses foodstamps and they don't take those? You don't know her situation. She has obviously thought about all of that or she wouldn't be going through all of this to take her child to the store! ANd the grocery store manager who told the other woman that her child obviously looked old enough to stay home alone - who the hell are you to tell someone when their child is or is not able to be alone at home?!!! What if she has a medical or mental disability that you can't see? Regardless, it's the parents decision when a child is old enough to be left alone. Grrrrrrrrr!!!! that just burns me up!
People need to stop judging others for what they do. This woman should not have to explain why she is bringing her daughter with her to go grocery shopping. I think people need to mind their own business and leave people alone.
Despite appearing normal at a glance, I suffer from severe irreversible nerve damage in my arms, and as a result I literally do not have the ability to lift objects heavier than a small can. I'm also prone to random vertigo, and fall over easily. So I have to take someone with me to help me shop. The nasty looks and comments I get are appalling. If you don't know what someone's situation is, you have no right to comment on it.
While I understand her, I totally HATE people who don't wear a mask when shopping groceries. Most of us here in Spain are wearing the ones that protect others, but not us, and yet I still see too many people who don't wear any. Put on a mask or back the f**k off, inconsiderate morons!
Amanda, How? Just because you don't have symptoms also doesn't mean you don't have it.
Load More Replies...I would NEVER, EVER criticize any parent for having their child with them. They could be in my shoes. December 28th, 2018, I had a series of mini-strokes at home and on top of that, my heart was stopping and restarting with up to 45 seconds between the stops and restarts. My GP determined that I needed a pacemaker and shipped me to another hospital, a larger regional medical center, to get a pacemaker put in. I now do not even go to the grocery store without my youngest son. Even though he is mildly autistic and developmentally delayed, he knows what to do if I have an episode. As long as I stay hydrated the effects of the stroke are not evident, so I keep a bottle of water with me at all times. SO, when I need to go to the grocery store, he is always with me, no matter what. The mini-stroke I suffered affected my short term memory, which has it's drawbacks as well.
I took my 3yo child to the supermarket yesterday (we live alone), and queued outside for an hour with him sitting in the bottom of the trolley so he didn’t run around and get close to everyone (he’s too big for the seat). When we got to the front of the queue I was told it was unhygienic for him to be in there so I had to take him out before going in?! Needless to say, he touched everything, ran around and crawled around on the floor having waited so patiently for so long...
I'm a single mom. I don't have a lot of people near me that can help me. Luckily I have one friend who wants to watch my son, so I can do groceries alone. My son is also a special needs kid, so doing groceries with him is a big drama normally. In the Netherlands we can still visit each other if you keep your distance. With children under 12 its different. My friend and I made agreements. When one of us has little cold, she won't come. I try to get everything I need when she is watching my son. Of course sometimes you forget something or you have to get something that you didn't know you needed. Then I have to take my son with me. I keep it short. Pick what I need and I am out. But I feel like I'm doing something wrong. People are looking mad and judgemental at you. I really do try, but sometimes I just can't do it alone. It is already hard enough, please don't judge people.
I went from Nebraska to North Carolina March 2 for a family death. My Rheumatologist gave me an N95 mask the week before and ordered me to wear it. I'm immunosuppressed. People were starting to complain about anyone outside of healthcare wearing one. Since I already stand out because I have to utilize wheelchair assistance, I was too ashamed to wear it. When I flew back on March 25, I was too afraid NOT to wear it. But by then it had really, really become a big deal to wear one. I literally wrote: High Risk, Chemo & Not Sick on it so I wouldn't have to explain or deal with dirty looks all day. It's still the only mask I have as there are none to buy & healthcare workers don't have enough. I have my own way of disinfecting it which is as experimental as everything else being done right now. But was able to get a gaiter mask before those were all gone. Self quarantined for 2 weeks upon return. Went 1 time to get my child from her father, went into a pump & pantry to pre pay fuel.
I really don't see the reason why bringing kids with you to the shops would be any worse. Just nosey busybodies wanting to find issue with other people. That said, her checklist of things to do forgot one item when returning to the car: Step 8.5 (or maybe 7.5) : Remove child from cart. 🤣
I know it's probably a different country and about 15 years ago, but I stayed home alone at that age. I even knew how to make fried eggs on the stove. My mom had to work, and my dad was, if I remember correctly, working out of town but not bringing in any money, since he drank it up. My two elder brothers would go to school and I would stay home, or if I was at school would walk home alone (the younger kids got out earlier.) As an adult I realise that this might seem irresponsible to some people, but it worked for us. If the child is responsible, it's fine to leave them alone for an hour, as long as they know how and who to call in case of emergency. But it is also fine to take your kid(s) with you, as long as you make sure they are safe. As a retail worker, though, I will say this. Please keep your kids in the carts and quiet. They are fine, as long as they aren't running around shouting. And don't allow your snot nosed, obviously sick child to attach itself to the employees' legs. There are reasons why we started wearing gloves and face masks when the first cases showed up in our country.
You're totally right I didn't even think of that it's still hard for me to believe that a stranger would actually say something like that to someone's child but that's the world we live in a world filled with complete nutbars
As a parent of 3 kids, one of them I raised myself until the age of 7, and one of the others has ASD, I can tell you 100% that some people feel they can tell you how to parent. Sadly, other mothers seem to be the main culprits. God forbid we be supportive of each other.

And..... you want the kid to have some stranger tell her that her mommy is trying to kill her? That stuff is happening all over the place. Some village idiot screamed at me for sneezing in public....after three days of rain, during pollen season. "Keep your mouth shut" is a lesson that people choose not to learn.

Wow! Who cares what other people think. Be more like me and say I don't give a f$#k. If someone even said anything to me about my kids I would be like somemore of your business f off and walk away that's how you handle that. Who cares if people judge you they don't matter
People do what they have to do to get by. Some people just need to learn to mind their own business instead of everyone else's.
Please do not encourage your kids to use lots of hand gel. Instead get them to wash their hands with soap and water. Also do not use lots of bleach in your house. Instead use a steam clear with reusable cloth
I'm a homeless single mom of 2. I totally get it. At least she/you had the resources to get gloves/mask. You go girl!
You go, Mommy! I am fortunate to have a partner in crime, but you should not have to deal with close-minded people!

It's sad it has come down to having to explain your motives because people are too quick to open their mouths to judge
May the good Lord above and the bad one below preserve us from nosey, judgemental, a-holes who labour under the impression that *your* business is any of *their* business.
Even though it's not a rule here, I've been the only one in my family to go out. It just makes more sense. I follow a very similar ritual when I do have to shop, including leaving my groceries in an outdoor shed for seven days before bringing them in the house. Perishables get wiped with sani cloths. There's no such thing as too much caution right now. You go girl! You do what you gotta do for you and your baby and for anyone who doesn't approve...invite them to do your grocery shopping for you!
America's past time: judge other people without knowing a thing about them. Very sad. : (
A five year old can stay at home alone for a short while, but what's wrong with taking her along for shopping? She's old enough to follow the necessary precautions to guard against infection. It's sad that people would judge the mother for this.
Five year olds cannot stay alone at all. Nine year olds maybe.

Be careful before you comment. I realize that you have to go to the grocery store and if you are the parent of a small child that child has to come with you, but there may be more to the story than you are being told. I don't know that but you show always be on your guard when you are only getting one side of the story. Right? Wrong?
I downvoted this. She is passing her insecurities on to her child seeking validation for her actions. She may or may not have been judged by the people in the store. There could be a person who isn’t so engrossed in their own life making a judgement as they pass, but it is forgotten about in 30 seconds. Be here for you, and work on not caring what others think because ultimately they don’t care.
IMHO, YOU LIVE WITH CHILD. SO SEEMS TO ME YOU'D HAVE TO WEAR BEE KEEPER SUITS IN YOUR HOME 24 HOUR TO AVOID EXPOSURE TO FAMILY.
There are many willing people in shallow Southern California who are offering to shop for others. I bet there are people in Texas who would do that for her. She and daughter could stay home.
Hello home delivery? Which is what I did as a single mum years ago, regardless of pandemic. And the state of the mother....
1. There are huge waiting lists for online shopping, they don't have an infinite number of delivery drivers. 2. Some people live in areas that can't get delivery, my friend lives on a steep hill and can't get things delivered. 3. Panic buyers take everything, and the shops have to send crappy replacements instead.
Load More Replies...Or you can do something like instacart, walmart pickup, walmart delivery there are a wide range of delivery options that you do not have to go into a store for. I have not brought my kids into a store since march
And you are not everyone. There are multiple reasons why not everyone can get home delivery.
Load More Replies...Are there people saying it is dangerous for the children??? Because they can get covid-19? It is wayyyy more dangerous to put them in a car and take them on the road, but you wouldn't think twice about that... 😉
And at the same time some single mothers take Corona as excuse to alienate the loving dads from their kids.
Who said that all single mothers have a divorced husband? Some of them have a dead husband, some of them have a divorced wife, some of them have a dead wife, some of them adopted their kids.
Load More Replies...This is a mom fishing for attention (which we're all giving her). No on in their right mind is going to judge you for taking a little kid to the store with you. The problem is when a group of friends or a huge family decide to take a "road trip" to the grocery store, so everyone else has to wait outside until they're done.
Can social media just go away as it’s SUPER annoying and So is society she placed a sign on her child because she wanted attention or she would have just went about her way
There are services for FREE that will get your food and deliver it for people in this situation. This is just an attention grab
Really? How do you reach them? I'm high risk & shouldn't be out but am the only adult in my home so that would be fantastic!
