Cat With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Finally Finds Forever Home, And His Humans Are Making Sure He’s Living A Happy Life

When Georgina Price and her fiance Christopher Lardner adopted their first rescue feline, Herbie, the 16-year-old cat, was near the end of his journey. Sadly, Herbie died just months later. And even though the couple had only known him for a little while, they were heartbroken by his passing. The loss, however, had opened their hearts for someone new.

“I just kept thinking about all the abandoned animals that might only have five months left and would spend the whole of that time in a shelter,” Georgina said. “We decided we would look for an extra special cat that might take a little longer to find a home.”

While browsing the web, Georgina stumbled upon Toby and Quinton. “We found them on the RSPCA website when they were looking for a home,” Georgina told Bored Panda. Quinton, a 7-year-old black and white cat, was missing all of his teeth, and Toby, a 6-year-old short-haired feline, had a lot of loose skin. “They’re a bonded pair, the RSPCA advertised them together. And we thought if we can help two adorable cats rather than one, then that’s the best possible outcome.”

Eventually, Georgina found out that Toby had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) or feline cutaneous asthenia (FCA), a genetic disorder that can cause unusually stretchy, loose, and fragile skin due to a lack of collagen. “We’d never heard of it before we found Toby,” Georgina said.

Georgina and Christopher visited the duo at the RSPCA where they lived in a special unit. “They were both terrified and huddled right at the back. Toby just hid behind Quinton the whole time, trembling.”

Georgina was able to pet Quinton, but she couldn’t touch Toby because he was just too scared. All things considered, she and Christopher were still confident they were ready to take good care of the exceptionally nervous special needs feline, so they adopted both Toby and Quinton.

Toby and Quinton took a little while to find peace in their new home. “They were just so scared and were living under the bed for weeks but food and love eventually got them out,” Georgina said. “And Now they own the place. They just do whatever they want and act mad when you turn the light on if they’re asleep on the bed or something.”

Toby’s delicate skin elasticity condition, however, makes him prone to injury even when he’s simply grooming himself or playing with Quinton. “He seems oblivious to it. His biggest problem is probably us trying to make sure he doesn’t get hurt or cleaning his wounds (he hates that).”

Because of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome symptoms, Toby’s stomach hangs down to his knees, and Georgina and Christopher are concerned about the effect the added weight of this extra skin might have on his long-term health. For example, the excess weight of his skin might cause joint problems.

“We’re very lucky that his hypermobility condition seems to be mild and we manage it very easily,” Georgina added. “His skin is just weaker than it should be, so he gets lots of tears, especially around his neck and head.”

“We’re always telling him off for scratching or cutting his nails to reduce the chance of injury and you can see he just thinks ‘leave me alone, I can take care of myself.'”

“He seeks Quinton out to help him clean himself so Quinton will lick his face and head, particularly any cuts.”

Minimizing stress on his joints, Toby’s owners also try to prevent him from jumping up or down from high places. “We’re always telling him off for scratching or cutting his nails to reduce the chance of injury and you can see he just thinks ‘leave me alone, I can take care of myself.'” but even though he requires a bit more extra care, Georgina and Christopher couldn’t be happier with Toby and his bro Quinton.

His condition aside, Toby is just your average kitty. He enjoys bird watching, playing with bouncy balls, and snuggling with his owners. “He loves belly rubs and will plop himself next to you and look at you, waiting for you to rub his belly,” Georgina said.

The woman hopes that sharing Toby’s story will not only raise awareness about his rare condition but will encourage more people to consider bringing special needs cats into their lives. “It doesn’t take any more to love them and despite whatever it is that may make them ‘special needs’, they are still beautiful animals with their own amazing personalities, likes, dislikes, and the ability to love you back.”

So loveable, both kitties. These owners are true Angels along with their furbabies. My Sebastian is a shelter kitty who was left abandoned in an apartment with no food or water. He is such a good boy and the best kitty I have ever owned who too is both a little Angel and devil somedays. With our three furry kids including our Corgi dog Cali, they are playful, loved, and happy. Couldn't ask for better.

This is so heartwarming to know that people can be this nice and I have 2 cats with special needs, these cats need more attention for people to see past their looks and see the love and affection they need. I'm so pathetic I freaking cried lol. I think that Quinton looked so adorable and Toby too! You could definetly tell they loved each other.

I recently adopted two elderly bonded cats for similar reasons. 14 yrs and 9 yrs old. Sadly the 9 yr old was hiding an illness. And died after only two months. But at the shelter she seemed desperate to get out. Smooching everyone. So I gave her some peace and quiet and love for her last few weeks. The 14 year old was hiding cat. Hated the shelter. He has really come out of his shell. And has accepted me. He loves cuddles. - but never ever touch his belly.

With EDS, the rule of thumb is 3. It takes 3 times as long to recover from an illness, 3 times as long for a wound to heal, and 3 times as long to recover from surgery. And your skin will tear through the stitches. I've never had surgery and not torn through (or next to) the wound. So it's probably good to leave him as-is! :)

What's the big deal? I look like that every morning. FYI the photo of him in the coat made me think that wearing one would hold up the skin on his belly and reduce the discomfort and stress on his body. Sort of like a compression stocking. How could you suggest this to the owners?

I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome! I'm bedbound because of it, and have been since I was about 25. It is so so so so so so so painful. It makes me sad that innocent animals have to deal with this much pain. I think the only thing that gets me through life is my family. And it looks like it's the same for Toby. Thank you for giving them such a good home! P.S. I guarantee that he doesn't seem "phased" because he is used to the pain. That's how I (and everyone with EDS) am. The first thousand times you get hit with a baseball bat, you cry. The millionth time, you barely bat an eye. But it still hurts the same amount! It's just something you stop reacting to.

Looking after special needs animals is one of the most rewarding things you can do I think. Ours wasn't physically impaired - she had an anxiety disorder her whole life - mental illness in cats is a very real, sad thing. I'm so glad I was able (with husband) to care for her for 14 years.

Love your site. When referring to people who have adopted animals, please use the more current guardian vs. owner. We own property, and sadly animals are considered property in many jurisdictions in the US. Thinking of ourselves as guardians shifts our relationship to them, even if it is subtle. They are not things - they are breathing, sentient beings who need love care and protection, just like children do. The Guardian Campaign was created by In Defense of Animals in California.

This is so sweet of you two to adopt special needs fur babies. All I could think of with the one that has loose skin is to put on the softest baby tee shirts and belly button bibs that we used in the 50's and 60's on our babies to keep the belly button tight and clean till it got better.

what a funny thing. I suffer from EDS since I was a child, even though I was only able to get the diagnosis at the age of 45, and now I find myself in front of a cat that has the syndrome and had its diagnosis very soon. cats could also have it, I almost envy him for the speed with which he was diagnosed. but ultimately I hope for him that his problem concerns only the skin, because I live in suffering now due to the aggravation of pains in the joints, all the joints, which often block me in leto.

Love..love them & they look more like little mythical creatures. There coats look worthy of a movie stars. IJS, could the excess tummy skin be surgically removed allowing for less stress?

I recently adopted two elderly bonded cats for similar reasons. 14 yrs and 9 yrs old. Sadly the 9 yr old was hiding an illness. And died after only two months. But at the shelter she seemed desperate to get out. Smooching everyone. So I gave her some peace and quiet and love for her last few weeks. The 14 year old was hiding cat. Hated the shelter. He has really come out of his shell. And has accepted me. He loves cuddles. - but never ever touch his belly.

There are different types. :) I've seen a few articles about women who have too much skin. I wonder if someday they'll differentiate those types even further, maybe with a different name. Sorry you have EDS, too!

Two adorable kitties here, regardless of their conditions. I'm wondering why Quinton lost his teeth, though. Also, Toby's wrinkles make me think of a shar-pei or bloodhound.

I have EDS, if the skin on the tummy is just the skin and not the abdominal muscle it will just look odd. If the muscle drops then they honestly need to put a kitty girdle on for support.

what a funny thing.
