One year ago I went on a strictly guided 7-day tour in North Korea, where they took away my passport and didn't allow me to explore anything, even Pyongyang, on my own.

North Korea, or The Hermit Kingdom, was definitely the weirdest country I had ever visited and during my time there I kept wondering what life was like in neighboring South Korea, which used to be exactly the same country just over 60 years ago! That's why at the end of life in North Korea experience, I promised myself to visit South Korea this year so that I could compare my North Korea vs. South Korea experiences. Those pairs of pictures you'll see below show the differences of life in both Koreas - first one stands for South, and the second, after the flip, stands for North.

And, this is the only thing they do in their free time....? No, somehow these pairs of pictures are like propaganda materials - for the other side.

Reminds me of my first visit to East Berlin in 1976. The roads were clear, but WWII ruble was in the City squares. Beautiful things were staged in store front windows, but not for the typical East Berliner. Returning to West Berlin the bus was check for East Berliners by using huge flat mirrors to look for escapees under the bus. In Estonia under Russian rule, the people were told bananas on Finish TV adds were all fake. Typical of totalitarian regimes. Lies. Attack the press, attack freedoms, convince people the dictator cares about YOU.

I don't see how people can let some one so power into power i mean if it was me and i know that it is very hard to do this in this kind of situation but find a way to take down the goverment there has got to be a way to many people are being mistreated.

My heart just breaks for those poor people in North Korea. I can't imagine the hell they live through every single days of their lives. Someone REALLY needs to take out that fat horrible piglet that's SUPPOSE to be a leader. His people are far too terrified to do it, it's up to the rest of the world to get it done. I'm not usually in favor of getting rid of people but this monster isn't a person. He a horrible evil tool of the devil, a demon and as far as I'm concerned he can be sent back to where he came from by any means necessary.

I was stationed in SO Korea 76-77 - such a beautiful country! Because of NO Korea, the entire country was on curfew from midnight to 4am. I wanted to retire and go back, but they don't like us GI's so much any more. Yes, I DO understand.

Does any one know why they are holding scarfs (or something like it) mostly in red? 😦

I guess they will tie them around their neck. Students in Vietnam have the red scarfs too.

As you look at the comparisons, keep in mind that while I can only imagine the horrible tyranny that these poor N. Korean people have to endure each day, some of these images are misleading in their comparison to each other. If you want to get a deeper view of North Korea check out this large collection of photos along with a narrative to put things into their proper perspective. http://www.earthnutshell.com/category/north-korea/
