I have always loved looking at fashion magazines. However, I do believe that the unrealistic depictions of women that they contain can be harmful. The beauty of fashion pictures is a pernicious one: those are not just representations, they are exhortations.
In particular, they say something about the way we should look and what we should aspire to in life (class, wealth, the audacity of the rich and powerful…). Moreover, I am also convinced that, no matter how well-crafted they are, those pretty images can’t be considered art as long as their purpose is to sell you something.
Therefore, I think it is a good thing for the viewer to re-appropriate them, to play with them as to stop just being a consumer and ultimately reclaim one’s identity. And I think collage is the perfect way to achieve that! For the works you’ll see below I used images from recent issues of Vogue US and Harper’s Bazaar US, a pair of scissors, a stick of glue and my inspiration :).
I hope you’ll enjoy the result!
