Although you might think these sculptures by Christopher David White are made of wood, they are actually solid ceramic sculptures. Using clay as his medium, the US-based artist creates hyper-realistic sculptures through which he explores the relationship between nature, man and impermanence.
Taking advantage of clay’s great ability to mimic different materials, White emphasizes that our understanding of the world is an illusion. Therefore, he creates an altered perception that forces the viewer to look closer.
Through his amazing works of art, White also tries to express our connection with nature. “Crumbling brick, rusting metal, and rotting wood become sources of inspiration. In my observations I also see similarities between the processes that occur in nature and those that drive us. By combining both man-made and natural elements within my work I hope to highlight the fact that we are not separate from nature but are, in fact, part of it.”
