From a technological point of view, some of these are quite impressive. From a user point of view, this is an annoyance. Actually, common sense can be expected, but it simply is not feasible that you more or less need to try to dismantle the machine before knowing it is safe to use... On the other hand, at least according to European law and legislation, customers are typically not liable to this kind of fraud unless they have acted neglient. Thus, the banks are asked to make ATMs tamper-resistant in their own interest.

For some reason I have only used an ATM just one time, in several years. I'm aware of the possible scams, but I have always felt more comfortable with either going to the bank where I make deposits, or obtaining cash when I am making a transaction at one of the three grocery stores I frequent. I certainly feel much better at the end of the day. ;D
I used to while living in England, now 20 years later they start to offer this service in Germany too. But not many stores do cashback yet
