Sadly, that doesn't work for the flu or a cold. The incubation time between being exposed and feeling sick is a week or so. During that week, you're shedding virus. In fact, you will infect MORE people before you feel sick than if you went to work sick. /// This is why whole classrooms of children get the same cold at the same time. It's maddening, but the whole movement that tells people to keep their kids at home is utterly useless. By the time your kid is staying home, everyone else already has their bugs.

Not sure who thought up that idiotic theory but anybody who knows or has been around, you know, people, knows that's nonsense about "You are only contagious before you show symptoms" is ridiculous. So it Aunt Messy most of the time.

Sometimes people feel compelled to show up because they are not paid sick leave. That is the inhumane policy. Everyone should have paid sick leave and manager should not penalize them for using it.

At my last job, we had cubicles with high walls. The guy on the other side of my wall arrived sick one morning. I heard him progress from just clearing his throat, to sniffling, to full blown coughing. I thought for sure he would work from home the next day. Nope. There he was again. Now he was coughing and blowing his nose. By the afternoon, I heard his neighbor behind him, clearing her throat and sniffling. They both showed up on Day 3 and by the end of the day, the neighbor next to them was sniffling and coughing. If the one guy had just stayed home that week, the other two probably would not have become sick at all. But the stupidest one was their manager. Never once did he emerge out of his cubicle at the end of their aisle and tell them to GO HOME and stay home until they were over their symptoms. Glad I don't work there anymore. Our manager is much more reasonable.

Yup. Colds last a month for me. Some people get a cold for 3 days and are good to go and laugh at me for being a germophobe and tell me I'm just being a pussy if I try to stay home during the initial stages. We all experience sickness differently, you d***s.

Why would you get blood tests to see if you had flu?

Okay Thalia - which flu was it? If you had blood tests you'll know exactly which one. Not that I can understand why you would have blood tests in the first place - especially twice.

@Thalia Lovering - Why would you even go to the doctor if you weren't feeling that bad? A low fever and a bit tired you said. Felt like a common cold you said. None of that requires a doctor's attention. OR blood tests. Colds and flu are viruses. Not much a doctor can do unless you get a secondary infection such as pneumonia - THEN you need treatment.

Nope. I have had the flu twice (with blood tests to prove it). Both times i had a low fever and just felt a bit tired. I didn't feel the need to stay in bed, i did because the doctor told me to. To me, it felt like a common cold.

What on earth is secondary flu??? You can get secondary infections due to flu but there is no such thing as secondary flu. I agree illnesses can affect people differently but to a great extent? Not by a huge amount. Except for anything secondary that may occur - but that can happen with colds too. Flu itself will have a typical range from within which people will vary. Anything vastly different is unlikely to be flu. Bronchitis on top of flu or a cold can happen (secondary illness) but I don't know why he would go to ER because of it. What's wrong with your ordinary doctor?

Got to agree with Alex. No such thing as secondary flu. Secondary infections to flu are common place. Bronchitis is often a problem for people who get colds (or flu) if they smoke (though no doubt you'll say that's not the case with your husband). Affects of an illness do vary but there are a minimum and maximum time period for most viruses and flu is typically 5-7 days. It has a known range and affect because people have studied these viruses. If you don't feel like eating, going without won't hurt you for a short while and by your reckoning you weren't that bad. There is so much wrong with what you've said.

Not everyone experiences illnesses the same way guys! My husband, son and I all got the flu last year, son was fine after being laid out for 2 days. He was out of school and running around by day 3. I was exhausted but not on my a*s. I could still get up and get us hot teas and such. We ordered in food not because we wanted to eat but because we had to. I was back at the gym a week later. Hubby was laid OUT for 3 weeks. He got bronchitis on top of the flu while we got better. So everyone's experiences with illnesses aren't exactly copies

Oh and he went to the ER twice, got secondary flu on top of the bronchitis.
