Since Egypt’s revolution back at the start of 2011, the country’s tourism industry has continually struggled through unrest, uncertainty, revolutions, changing governments and threats of terrorism. Foreign government warnings have been lighting Egypt up red and amber all over and there’s still no sign of an end. Hotel closures are common. From abandoned, once thriving businesses to incomplete half built shells, the country is scattered with physical evidence of the continuing uncertainty.
From Autumn 2013 to Spring 2014 I lived in a small town on the Sinai Peninsula called Dahab. Dahab is known for its hippies and its divers, and for the most part they remain a fearless bunch, continually returning and keeping the small Bedouin town alive with their trade. However, even Dahab has suffered, leaving many abandoned buildings dotted around town. On my last day, a friend and I went exploring in one such hotel.
