China Just Banned Ivory Sales, And That’s Massive Step For The Protection Of Elephants Around The World

By the end of 2017, all ivory trade in China will be banned, as per Chinese government’s new rule.  Aili Kang, Asia Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society, wrote: “This is great news that will shut down the world’s largest market for elephant ivory. I am very proud of my country for showing this leadership that will help ensure that elephants have a fighting chance to beat extinction.”

As of today, 20,000 to 30,000 elephants are killed for poaching purposes each year. The savannah elephant population has decreased by 30% in the last 7 years, and now there are less than 400,000 wild elephants in Africa. The ivory usually ends up being sold in Asia, with China being the leading consumer. Therefore, the Chinese ban on the ivory sales is a truly significant move for the world’s elephant population.

Truly a big step in the right direction. Thank you so much to the people who established and enforce this law!

70+% of all Chinese are completely unaware of life beyond theirs. It is that confined and backwards of a country in ALL but the big cities. They are the singular most barbaric toward treatment of animals than any other culture. They literally qualify for 'primitive.' I've traveled around the world multiple times - starting in '76 - and have visited China and it's territories five times. The cruelty to animals I have personally witnessed is unable to be expressed in a believable way - it is beyond Westernized minds conception.

I really hope you try to reduce your own impact. Though you may be right, it is best to begin in one;s own backyard before critisizing the neighbor. Much love.

That is truly good news; let us hope other countries that still allow or at least tolerate the sale of ivory will follow. And let us hope this practice will be extended to the many other products originating from poaching.

That's a freaking good news, but why end of 2017 though? Why not earlier? You know those elephant poachers would be mad killing before end. I hope the rest of them are safe.

Ahhh yes, why not let them kill as many more as they possibly can this year, instead of just banning it now.

If it is true it is wonderful but it would be great if they could implement it immediately - the same must apply for rhinos and tigers and other great species slaughtered. Keep in mind gorillas, giraffes, leopards, etc - all wanted for parts for trophies and not just for the 'medicinal' effects. the only medicinal effect being the euphoria of those revolting people who not only buy into this trade but lets also work on canned hunting which is so hideous.

Well, this is great. I hope lots of other countries will follow but I still hate China because of the cruel ways they prepare and kill cats and dogs for meat.

You are hating an entire race for the actions of a few? We all have our problems, we just don't go around saying we hate the US, or we hate the UK or we hate Australia (i'm just naming countries here). Not all chinese agree with the idea of eating cats and dogs, most generations now are completely against it and will stand up against it. But I guess it's much easier to be racist isn't it? If you are talking about the festival then it happens in a province, a small area in China.

This is good news. Now, if only they also stopped -Eating dogs commonly. -Capturing sharks, cutting off their fins, and abandoning them in the oceans to drown for shark fin soup. -Encouraging the poaching of rhinos for "medicinal purposes," despite the fact that rhino horns are the same as human hair or fingernails, and has no medicinal value whatsoever. -Killing sting rays for other false medical purposes. -Causing mass bee deaths (which led to extinction of bees in some areas, where crops need to be pollinated by hand now). -Supporting black markets and smuggling. I can keep going on and on, I have information like this for most countries. Animals mean more to me than people, so I have done my research. I know some scientists developed a pink poison to help rhinos, in which the bright color warns off poachers, and their is a toxin that is not dangerous to the animals, but makes harvesting the horns for medicinal reasons pointless.

Finally. Let's hope that they do the same regarding rhinos and all the other animals they have killed for their brainless reasons like medicine.

Beautiful Lie. The Chinese are still exploiting this trade, including rhinos and basically any wild life that has magical "healing" powers. Zimbabwe recently sent 35 young elephants along with giraffes and hyenas! They took these animals to live in captivity for the rest of their lives! Disrupting natural herds and the ecosystem. You wanna know why they took the animals? As payment for military uniforms and boots! This is a beautiful lie unfortunately, China will continuously be a greedy powerhouse in the exploitation and abuse of animals.
