Someone Is Mad With Disney Princesses Being Too White, Gets Shut Down With Facts
Life influences art and Walt Disney’s racism was no exception – just look up the since-banned Disney film “Song of The South.” But despite their creator, the company has steadily tried to become more progressive, especially with their newer more diverse and feminist Disney Princesses – but not everyone is satisfied.
Recently someone created a graphic that showed each season represented by a Disney princess
One commenter didn’t hesitate to call out the image creator blaming Disney
This person defended Disney against any claim of whitewashing, with this (slightly wrong) geography argument
P.S. Yes. Brave is set in Scotland, not Ireland, but that doesn’t make a huge difference as we know most scots are as white as a sheet of paper.
And the comments on their argument was just as divided

Yeah, I mean, I'm French and even I can recognize the accent of the characters.

The problem of people like this is that they separate people only based on skin colour. Culture matters even more, just because a character is the same colour as you it doesn't mean you will feel represented by them if they are from a completely different culture - sincerely, an Eastern European who barely gets positive representation in western media.
Thank you. This is the same with Africans and people who are from north America. I am from Nigeria and my ancestors were not slaves. I have never received any racial prejudice in my life but I console anyone who has. I can't really relate more to the stereotypical black person in America other than our skin being the same.

Most people make random things racist when it isn't. That's why I can't really take racial things seriously. I mean, I know it exists and everything, but not everything that happens to you is because of your race. There are other problems in the world too.
Load More Replies...*yawn* If you're bothered with Caucasian characters, why not search for non-mainstream international works of art and entertainment yourself? Let's start with Japan and Korea, since they're pretty easy to find. Many of Japanese stories are set in a European background, true, but twice as many include exclusively east Asian people, or raceless characters (I mean, which ethnicity has naturally green hair). Oh, and Aliens. Let's not forget aliens. Hey! No need to move away from USA pop culture after all either. Star Trek, Star Wars, so many Marvel and DC heroes... Maybe you can look it up yourself about multimedia done by African producers in Africa by African authors and based on African stories too. I mean, people just want to complain, without bothering doing the actual work and educate themselves so they can both enjoy diversity and promote international art at the same time.
That always bothered me.. people crying over the lack of POC folks in fairytale movies or historian movies when it's set in a country and time period that just didn't had a lot of variety. Y'all can't change history. I know whitewashing is a huge problem in hollywood, but this is not it..
Most Disney characters are white because Disney has only recently started to include non-white characters on purpose. For seasons of the Northern hemisphere however (spring, summer, autumn, fall) it does make some sense to use the white characters predominantly from there. Other parts of the globe have completely different seasons (monsoon season for example) or the difference in seasons is barely noticeable at all because it's hot all year round.
There are vast expanse of the globe that experience the four seasons just as North America and Europe. That’s kind of the whole point of a globe. W e a t h e r

Isn't Brave set in Scotland? Y'know with them all speaking with scotch accents....
Yea. I think they realised and corrected it with something along the lines of “brave is set Scotland but still they pretty pasty there”

Probably not out of malice to be sure, but the end result is a pretty white line-up until they intentionally started to intentionally change that.
Well both have a valid point I think. Those stories are based on European tales, so it makes sense that the characters are caucasian. For the other hand it is also true that more diversity would be nice, choosing more stories that come from different lands. But its also true that Disney has gone a long way, so its nice to see more modern and diverse movies like Moana (for the origin) o Frozen (For the sister love instead of the traditional romance).
Do you know that in the original its a brother and sister (children) who meet the (quite bad) snow queen. The brother gets enthralled by the queen and his sister rescues him. Hmm this reminds me of "Hänsel und Gretel" and "Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot". Those are very nice stories abaut siblings which I would very much like to see in a Disney adaptation. Or some russian Folk tales...

Culture is more important than race. I'm white but I'll never call myself a WASP because the only letter in there that applies to me is W. If you think all white people are Angelo Saxon then you need to retake some history classes.
I mean, it just makes sense! Freaking getting mad at white people just for being white. Yes I'm more then angry. This is offensive. I'm one of the palest girls you will ever meet, and no. I'm not racist in any way, shape or form. My two best friends are Vietnamese and Nigerian while my boyfriend is Spanish. I've encountered SO many racists telling me that I should 'stick with my own race' and no I won't. This is freaking offensive and just outright wrong. I can't believe anyone would say such an idiotic and rude thing. (Btw my fav Disney princess is Tiana, she's so kind to the prince and is deadset on having her own restaurant to fulfill her and her dads dream! What's your fav Disney Princess?)
It's not that they're whitewashing, it's the fact that they often make movies about white princesses when there are so many other types of people in this world. I can't explain what I felt when I saw Tiana up on screen, and I want that for more little girls all over the world.
Actually, Brave was set in Scotland... and Frozen was set in Norway. But yeah, I agree, pretty goshdarn white.
Sooo.... Brave was set in Scotland, not Ireland. And... Frozen was set in Norway. But still, pretty goshdarn white, i do agree.
How do you know if you are living in a world of abundance and privilege? When you are having heated debates about cartoon characters. Major concerns in your life are not whether or not you will eat today, or survive the night, but whether made up princesses are too white. If you have participated in this argument, your life (like mine) is very blessed.
Karolina Wv - It's pretty sad that in your effort to explain (what exactly?) you choose to bash Ireland & Scotland's entire populations for being "unbelievably white", which basically discredits your supposed approach to being racially neutral, and could be likened to the same incendiary juxtaposition that Kenyans are unbelievably black. How would that go over? (Let me guess, you'll say "factual"). Points can be valid yet delivered with some class but it's clear you have none. And the total lack of capitalization with each sentence just goes to show how [your] so-called journalism is a farce 'profession' on this website. Bored Panda puts foot in mouth.

If i will write a novel or a screenplay, i would base on something i know and familiar with. So definitely the characters would be more likely base on my ethnicity, culture or color. So if you want a character based on your preference then write your own novel or produce your own movie.
Isn't this calendar also prejudiced against any equatorial nation that doesn't have four seasons but only 'rainy' and 'dry' seasons? (I jest).
Ok detail! Brave is set in SCOTLAND! And the population of Scots (especially the red heads) are so white they are pale blue!
BRAVE is set in Scotland {red hair} and she forgot Mulan & Lilo when listing diversity.
Short story: they aren't whitewashing, they're just going with the actual facts
I think the issue is with whoever put the graphic together, not with Disney. The person who created the graphic only chose white characters when Disney provides plenty of others. Why couldn't Moana be summer, for example?
Having to read this bs from someone who call non-white ppl “ethnic” - probably buying bs music from the “world music” session too lol
Some people see racism everywhere. I remember one online discussion where I disagreed with one commenter. That person become very angry and started calling 'white trash racist' and wrote that I must have written my comment only because he was black. I did not know that person was black - his profile page did not have any photos on him. My profile page was also without any pictures so it was weird that he thought that I was white. The discussion topic did not have anything to do with a race or etnicity.
Um. If you are going to back Disney and all that, at least get the countries right. Brave is set in Scotland not Ireland.
For skin color Sherwin Williams says I'm the color Posy SW6630. I'm gonna stick with that.
Damn app. Sexually attracted to Disney characters? I've never looked at a princess and been like, yeah she's so hot!!!! It sounds like that is a specifically them issue

Just enjoy the character, I don't say, "oh a white character," I just enjoy the character. I liked most if not all of Disney's characters. Stop being racist and looking for such.
People looking for something to be outraged about is getting kinda outrageous. However, in order to be seen as sensitive and concerned I'll be outraged about all these adults hanging around Disney movies.
why dont we as black people just get our own s**t and stop whining for white people s**t?
What, someone accused something of being too white!? THIS IS BRAND NEW AND HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE! These clowns are obsessed with skin color, what a bunch of dumbasses.
Once again I ask, "Why is boredpanda so, utterly, obsessed with Disney Princesses? We are all adults on boredpanda. Maybe if this were an artistic forum for eight year old girls I could understand, but.....
I agree that everything is over saturated with whiteness but as a person of color, we have bigger s**t to care about than Disney. Your kids should not watch that mindless trash, it’s so beyond inappropriate for kids anyway. Always about a girl finding a “boyfriend.” FOH. I grew up without Disney and I only see advantages from it. Let white people have their ignorance.
They've tried to change the narrative a bit. Frozen is about sister's love. They're still bullshitty though.
