Black Mom Puts Up A Sign About How Her White Neighbors Are Harassing Her, The Local Community Steps Up
A single black mom turned to her community for help after being constantly harassed and threatened by her neighbors, and the response she got has been amazing.
Jennifer McLeggan is a nurse who lives in Valley Stream, on Long Island, with her daughter Immaculate. However, her life turned into a living hell when her next-door neighbors tried to intimidate her and make her move out.
Once word got out about Jennifer’s plight, some community members have been keeping watch over her home to protect her. Now, police officers from the Nassau County 5th Precinct have officially given the woman protection around the clock while the county has launched an investigation.

Some of Jennifer’s neighbors have been throwing feces and dead squirrels in her yard, spitting on her property and walking around with guns. She’s been living in her current house for the last 2 and a half years and has been getting fines for the dog feces in her yard.
“I bought the property when I was pregnant, and this is the truth, the property was in bad shape. I’m trying my best to make every effort to clean the property. I’ve done my best to clean the property,” the single mom told ABC7NY about the situation.
“I mow the lawn, when there’s snow out here I’m shoveling the snow by myself. I’m doing what I can to keep the property clean. I kept on noticing dog feces. I kept on noticing ticket ordinances from the Valley Stream Village town. I keep getting tickets. I keep seeing dog feces. I installed a camera here. I caught my neighbor throwing dog feces in front of my property. I took that video to court, and I won a judgment.”
She also spoke about the sign that she put up on her front door: “In case something happens to me here, then somebody would know I’m in the house with a baby. If I die in here, at least cops would see the sign.”
Jennifer hasn’t been the only local to be harassed: Erica Coreas said that something similar happened to her when she first moved into the neighborhood, too, but on a smaller scale.
This Thursday, July 16, there is a protest planned to support Jennifer and her daughter. Meanwhile, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement that they do not tolerate harassment or intimidation because of who people are or what they look like. County police department detectives are conducting an investigation into the matter.

In NY the guy with the handgun needs a special license to carry outside of his home (they need to provide cause). If he does not have it this should not be a case of "we can't do anything." The US permits guns, but most places will not allow walking around with it drawn like that. Also you have photo evidence of at the very least trespassing, granted a slap on this wrist, but the police should have at least charged or fined them to try putting them back.

Infuriating but sadly typical story of police ignoring a black woman in danger. Police also protect powerful white people when their victim(s) were also white. Per an article in a city newspaper, the mayor of an affluent small city regularly abused his wife, culminating in his screaming at her in the presence of their infant son. Five of the city’s police cars responded to this loud scene. Later, a lawyer requested police records about this man, but received only records about some driving infraction. He persisted and got records about the abuse incident, but those records were heavily edited to remove “sensitive” information. Though they have divorced, his ex-wife is not safe. He threatened to have her deported to her native country even though she’s a U.S. citizen. She won’t press charges against him, because she said he could destroy her. Now he is mayor again. Few city residents are aware of this scandal because it got no more publicity after that one article.

I'm half Puerto Rican and was amazed at how bad it was up there, and I came from the south! That poor woman! What's really awesome is that to own a home on long island (Nassau county) is an achievement, homes are *extremely* expensive! Most people rent, houses are divided into apartments. It's repulsive to see neighbours treat someone who's different to them so appallingly... no excuse for their behaviour. Here in the UK we have issues in neighbourhoods, usually 'estates' where people live in council housing. The anti-social behaviour also affects neighbouring streets and beyond- we've had some near where I live and the police in the UK are very limited in the action they can take. If the trouble makers live in council housing, they may be threatened with removal to an other estate in a different city but that takes years to sort. Most people who are harassed in their homes here, and have been burgled or have things stolen from their property resort to installing CCTV cameras. The police can't do anything without evidence. Sad, but true. In the case of the story in this post, if the houses are privately owned, there's no eviction order that can be used against them. The black community coming out to support her is probably the best statement they can make.

Long ago my family came from Atlanta when the South gone South (very bad pun, sorry) and for three generations we are Brazilian, and I really don't like my country (its culture and habits, but it's me). This is messed up on so many levels. The police did not even bother getting involved the way they should have been until her story started getting more public attention. Seeing the response from black people in her community, possibly risking their own lives to protect hers, reminds me of the goodness in unprivileged humanity.
This is absolutely crazy. Worst part is I only live 10-20 minutes from where she lives. I can't believe this happened, it truly makes me scared for my life as well as hers.

If I had been this lady's neighbor and seen that guy with the gun outside my window, he would have been a corpse by the time the cops got there. Hey, when I moved into my current house, the neighborhood was all white owners of the homes. BUT, times change, people move on due to job transfers and such. Right now, I have a black family on one side and a Muslim divorced dad with two now college age boys. I am glad that I am not like my dad. When black families started moving into the neighborhood I grew up in, my dad and mom got out as quick as they could. What was really sad to me was the friends they dropped because they had sold their homes first to black families before they could sell theirs. I should put a sign up telling about my black neighbors who are section 8 renting a house next to me in Frisco Texas. They don't mow the grass, they leave trash in the lawn and on the street. There's trash, broken furniture in various places around their yard and around the house. They are ridiculous. The patriarch of the household pulled his car up onto the front yard to work on it. Leaving ruts and such in the lawn. I got a plastic target Shopping bag and picked up the trash on the street by the curb in front of their house and put the bag on their front porch. That bag stayed on their front porch at least three months.

Per an article in a city newspaper, the mayor of an affluent small city regularly abused his wife, culminating in his screaming at her in the presence of their infant son. Five of the city’s police cars responded to this loud scene. Later, a lawyer requested police records about this man, but received only records about some driving infraction. He persisted and got records about the abuse incident, but those records were heavily edited to remove “sensitive” information. Though they have divorced, his ex-wife is not safe. He threatened to have her deported to her native country even though she’s a U.S. citizen. She won’t press charges against him, because she said he could destroy her. Now he is mayor again. Few city residents are aware of this scandal because it got no more publicity after that one article.

Damn Long Island/Nassau County is so very racist! I lived there for 6+ years and was shocked at how racist it was. I'm half Puerto Rican and was amazed at how bad it was up there, and I came from the south! That poor woman! What's really awesome is that to own a home on long island (Nassau county) is an achievement, homes are *extremely* expensive! Most people rent, houses are divided into apartments. It's repulsive to see neighbours treat someone who's different to them so appallingly... no excuse for their behaviour. Here in the UK we have issues in neighbourhoods, usually 'estates' where people live in council housing. The anti-social behaviour also affects neighbouring streets and beyond- we've had some near where I live and the police in the UK are very limited in the action they can take. If the trouble makers live in council housing, they may be threatened with removal to an other estate in a different city but that takes years to sort. Most people who are harassed in their homes here, and have been burgled or have things stolen from their property resort to installing CCTV cameras. The police can't do anything without evidence. Sad, but true. In the case of the story in this post, if the houses are privately owned, there's no eviction order that can be used against them. The black community coming out to support her is probably the best statement they can make.

Long ago my family came from Atlanta when the South gone South (very bad pun, sorry) and for three generations we are Brazilian, and I really don't like my country (its culture and habits, but it's me). The last years I've seen so much stupid things - yes, stupid because I can't find a better word that fits - in U.S. and made me quit from my childhood's wish to live there. I won't say all it's happening was everyone's fault but has shown how the American culture is so entitled they can fight for their own individual rights and forget about all the other people, as we call it in here: "only think on their own bellybuttons". They need stop to think about "black" and "white" people and begin to care about people in general, because their country will fall apart from inside and it'll be their fault.

I am beautifully proud of HER/THE community for stepping up. Not the BLACK community or the WHITE community but THE COMMUNITY. That's the way everything should be considered. This is messed up on so many levels. The police did not even bother getting involved the way they should have been until her story started getting more public attention. Seeing the response from black people in her community, possibly risking their own lives to protect hers, reminds me of the goodness in unprivileged humanity.

Hey, when I moved into my current house, the neighborhood was all white owners of the homes. BUT, times change, people move on due to job transfers and such. Right now, I have a black family on one side and a Muslim divorced dad with two now college age boys. I am glad that I am not like my dad.
