The Same Artist Who Made People Cry With Her ‘Good Boy’ And ‘Black Cat’ Comics Just Released A New One With Albatross

Illustrator Jenny-Jinya has found a successful formula with her sad stories about Death visiting animals—you may remember shedding a tear over her “good boy” comic or her multi-part black cat story that sought to draw awareness to cat abuse and neglect. The last time Bored Panda caught up with her, she shared that she makes these sad comics to give a voice to victims, creating empathy for the animal casualties of humans’ actions.

In her latest cartoon drawings, the artist addresses the far-reaching consequences of one human-made natural disaster, plastic pollution, and how wild animals suffer from it.

Jenny’s new comic is about the effects of plastic waste on seabirds

A study found that plastic floating in the ocean attracts algae that smells similar to the krill eaten by albatrosses and other seabirds. By mistaking items covered in this algae for food, the birds then unknowingly swallow inorganic material or feed it to their chicks.

Some birds die by swallowing so much indigestible waste that they experience blockages or are unable to take in enough food, as dramatic pictures of bird carcasses filled with plastic have shown, but the effects of plastic consumption are usually more insidious. To find out what is happening to the birds before they are found dead, Australian researchers performed blood tests on flesh-footed shearwaters, seabirds that live off the coasts of Australia and New Zealand, but have been steadily dwindling in population. It turns out that even birds that have only consumed a few pieces of plastic are slowly poisoned as plastic leaks pollutants absorbed from the environment into their bodies, causing stunted growth, high cholesterol and potential kidney disease.

Advances have been made in ocean-cleaning technology in recent years, with a 2,000-foot-long plastic-collecting device successfully picking up plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch last year, and hundreds of plastic-collecting fixtures called Seabins installed in busy harbors all over the world. However, conservationists say that even if cleaning technology continues to improve and more devices like these are installed in the future, they will be unable to make a dent in the amount of plastic in the ocean without putting a stop to the waste continuing to enter the ocean. For that, legislating the use of single-use plastics and educating the public on how to cut down on plastic is the only way to make a difference.

She also drew a comic on the plight of the animals in Australia due to the fires and a backstory for the "Good Boy" dog who was cruelly abandoned. Her comics are deep, meaningful, and make me cry every damn time.

The worst is that it is now known for many, many years and instead of doing something to solve this problem, it gets worse and worse (I became aware of this problem when I travelled to New Zealand in 2007...).

Congratulations, Jenny-Jinya, you've made me cry once again. Rest in peace, little Mo. I'm sorry that we could not save you, but let's work harder and better to save more animals. Peace out.

Honestly, anything sad with animals truly affects me to the point of triggering awful thoughts that just won't leave. So, although I believe the artist's work is truly heartfelt, I have not and will not read any of these comics. :-(

Agreed! I don't believe in ignoring problems or sticking your head in the sand but I don't believe in self inflicted pain either. I don't read these either it seems the same as watching reruns of Old Yeller over and over.

I'm a generation smoker (all my ancestors smoked during pregnancy) but it hurts me to know that the cigarette butts are pushed in the ocean. They should invent some bio-degradable cigarette butts. I tried vaping and didn't like it. Nicotine is a natural element in tobacco; natives still use it for ceremonies. But Cigarette Co. is really making it more addictive than it should be.

When people go running or walking here in Sweden, they usually bring a bag with them to pick up litter and recycle it. It gives a more thorough workout for the body, and the planet win also. I love the win-win of it. It's smart.

This so sick... In case no one mentioned this yet: do not, never, feed birds with anything salty! Crows (and maybe other birds, too ... I just know it for sure about crows) get birth defects when their mother ate too much salt ... crippled feet and the like. It's not a favour to them, it's poisoning them. And, FFS, throw you cigarette butts into the ashtray ... or trashcan, if their fire is off. Isn't that hard...

I pick up litter often, especially when I'm down because it's something small but concrete I can do that might make a difference. I started doing this because of participating in a beach clean up in Canada in the early 90s. I filled one huge garbage bag with just plastic tampon applicators. I'd already filled one with all the other kinds of garbage so I made it a goal. I was horrified. I never used plastic applicator tampons but wow, it was so freaking discouraging and disturbing to see a 50 gallon bag full of them. I'm glad there are other alternatives now. Likely too little, too late, but there it is.

THIS. THIS comic is the reason I lovingly wash, dry, and recycle every single one of those plastic condiment containers you get with your takeout. I'll be grumbling to myself as I take a toothbrush soaked in vinegar to get the damn salad dressing out of the damn nooks and crannies of the damn condiment lid... then my mind will flash to this albatross mom and her baby.. Next thing I know I'm getting choked up at the sink and my sister is asking me what happened. This comic is also a good thing to show people who don't recycle plastic because "it takes just as much energy to recycle it as it does to create it". Stellar eco-logic, Skylar! So that means, when you stick your empty meal-in-a-bottle container in the trash, not ONLY will that bottle have affected the environment because of the emissions released to produce it, but now a baby albatross is choking on garbage, too, because there's a giant floating mass of plastic in the ocean the size of Texas. Great work, Captain Planet!
