After a night of cocktails, I asked this insanely hot friend of mine, who had walked me home, up for coffee. He refused because, as he told me later, "god knows what might have happened". It took me about five years to get him out of the friend zone. Now we have three kids and have been married for 7 years.

Wasn't the title about an 'obvious hint' .. 'I'm cold' means you're cold, I want to be your girlfriend means I want to be your girlfriend. Not sure how that could be easier. Honestly.
"I'm cold" is a terrible flirt line, and probably helped along the weird stereotype of "women are always cold" more than actual biological factors. Honestly because I'm kind of callous as well as socially awkward, my response would probably just be "Well, you should've brought a sweater."
A man who will get up out of a comfy chair and spend an hour building a fire to keep you warm is a keeper.
I really wish I had my current "idgaf" attitude back when I was younger and single. Dropping hints is for the birds. Just flat out tell someone you like them. They'll either like you back or not. At least you'll know, and there's none of this hinting back and forth and trying to decode the other person's actions.

The thing is, the guy may have gotten the hint... and wasn't particularly in the obliging sort of mood. lets be honest. when was the last time it took a guy an hour to build a bonfire? also, the 'wiggling' could have weird-ed him out. Alternatively, this fellow is as clueless a hint-receiver as the rest of us *and* a consumate city-slicker.
you could have just said "hold me", men would be just as clueless to that as to "i'm cold" but you would have gotten what you wanted.

My sister's cat suddenly seemed to get fatter overnight. We thought it was doing the above until one day we found it fighting with another cat - which looked exactly like it, but thinner.
