Beach Wedding Photo Bombers

One of my family’s favorite past-times is photo bombing beach weddings. My husband and I lived in Hawaii for five years. One of our favorite beach spots was a group of ocean lagoons near our house called Ko Olina. There were beach weddings happening nearly every hour at these lagoons. It was the chapel bells were ringing so frequently, it was comical. I remember lying on my beach towel one day asking my husband, “How many random people’s wedding photos do you think we are in just chillin’ in the background in our bathing suits?”
The thought cracked us up, but the challenge to increase that number was even more exciting.
So, from that moment it was a contest…”How many beach wedding photos can we get ourselves into?”

We quickly realized that actually photo bombing people’s wedding photos was not cool or kind or fun. The wedding coordinators would shoo us away or we would get scowls from the bridal party. It’s not our style to be rude (just silly). So, we started taking our own photographs of us being our silly selves with the wedding in the background/foreground making every effort to be non-invasive while still having fun. We turned the frequent beach weddings into a family game…a past-time…a family tradition.
In 2006, we moved from Hawaii to Kansas (land locked NO beaches)and our beach wedding photo bombing became a game we could only play only on vacation.
Now, anytime our family is at a beach, we have our eyes peeled for beach weddings. We include our kids in the fun and whoever else wants to play. This year, while vacationing in Hawaii with my parents, we enlisted my mom and dad as official beach wedding photo bomb paparazzi. When we see a white gown and an entourage of bridesmaids on the beach, the whole family congregates to formulate a “photo bombing plan”. We have a blast trying to figure out the silliest pose or the best angle for our picture. We welcome anyone to join in on the game…it really is fun.
I recently spotted a picture on Facebook of a friend’s daughter photo bombing a wedding in China. And, my husband’s boss has offered up the challenge that his family can photo bomb more beach weddings then we were able to do over our recent Spring Break vacation.

In my family, we like to make a game out of anything to infuse our lives with fun. Nap time, homework, cleaning house…to name a few. We believe that you create your experiences and we choose to create fun and silliness any opportunity we get.

We have not yet explored other photo bombing opportunities…the possibilities are endless…who knows what photographs the Russell’s will show up next?

For now, we are sticking to beach weddings.
