Animals Invade Cities As People Quarantine Themselves At Home

As quarantines roll out in a number of countries, people often bury themselves in movies, social media drama or a good book. While taking a walk outside is encouraged by some governments (as long as a distance from other people is maintained), a lot of people completely forget about the outer world. Well, nature, however, does its thing nonetheless and people are noticing an unexpected outcome of the quarantine. In countries like Japan, Italy, and Thailand, people observed animals roaming the streets due to human absence.

Like in Japan, where deer that are local to Nara Park were observed taking to the streets in search of food. Usually, the park is swarming with tourists, as the Sika deer living there are a local attraction. Tourists would usually buy crackers sold at the park meant specifically to feed the deers, however as the number of visitors plummeted in recent weeks, the deer seem to have no choice but to wander out of their territory to find something to munch on.

People in Nara, Japan reported seeing deer that usually stay in the park roam out onto the streets

Plenty of photos and videos of the deer roaming the streets of Nara emerged, with people responding either in shock or awe. Twitter user okadennis who posted a number of shots of the deer reported finding the whole occasion amusing.

One Italian Tumblr user reported seeing wild boars walking around

Naturally, the country with over 30k cases and a severe lockdown in place, Italy, also observed a similar phenomenon. Numerous accounts of various animals (like sheep, boars and a horse!) wandering the streets appeared on Italian social media. Most of the people who posted their observances were pretty amused with the situation despite the tedious circumstances surrounding it.

Another Italian reported another animal on the loose: “In my hometown, a random horse appears”

A fellow Italian responded with a picture of sheep roaming the streets

The saddest thing is that, to amuse ourselves, we have trained these wild animals to depend on us to supply them with food (crackers for the deer, snacks for the monkeys), so that when something like this happens, they’ve forgotten how to forage for food on their own. On the other hand, and just as sad, the horse and sheep are domesticated animals who truly depend on us to take care of them (though they can become somewhat feral, given enough time). That tells me their keepers are unable to keep them fed and contained, so they’ve gotten through their fences and are wandering on their own, extremely vulnerable to predators and utterly incapable of fighting them off.

At least for the 'deer' case it's not that abnormal. I've been to Nara twice, and it's basically a massive deer sancutary. So they are probably looking for humans to feed them and are confused. Nara park has hundreds of dear roaming near the shrine and the roads etc is usually full of tourists who interact with the deer. They sell deer crackers to feed them etc. I imagine they got used to it and are wondering where the deer crackers all went, although I assume people are still feeding them.

Faith Tarcova, only animals which were captured in the wild, brought to "wet" meat markets, where they were crammed into small cages, heinously tortured and murdered and gobbled up by evil, sanguinary, heartless people, only then - their corpses infect "us" with deadly viruses....and rightly so. Do you understand it??? Nature is fighting back.

Exactly. We've invaded their territory long enough. Far too many of one animal - humans isn't a good thing. This pandemic is Nature's Revenge.. I hope these creatures find enough to eat.

Again, a few of those arrogant people down-voted Jessica's and Sarah's, Raul's, Martha's comments. Now, you cannot even express empathy for starving animal - it bothers them so much.

Because humans are the worst predator..that explains it they are no longer afraid to roam around in the absence of humans..

The sad thing is that a lot of those animals will have to surviva by themselves because most of them would normally be hand-fed by tourists. I hope people leave food out for them...

We just need a good plague to wipe out a bunch of humans and then even more animals will roam free again. If you vote for Bernie we won't even need a plague because millions will die from starvation.
