My husband and I are two Canadian parents who are very concerned about Mr. Trump and his agenda. We wrote him an open illustrated letter in hopes that he can read it and get in touch with his softer side.

This is our Letter to Mr. Trump.

“When the Republicans send their politicians, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you (Ronald Reagan). They’re not sending you (Abraham Lincoln). They’re sending candidates that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems to the rest of the world. They’re bringing intolerance. They’re bringing bigotry. They’re racists.

There was a time when it wasn’t this way. There was a time when the conservative movement stood for something more than exploiting people’s fears and anger to push through bigoted and regressive policies. Interestingly, there was also a time when Donald Trump stood for more than inflammatory sound bites that ignite social media and assuage his ego.

As new parents who have become accustomed to dealing with self-centered behaviour and attention-seeking outbursts, and who are genuinely alarmed at the prospect of such characteristics being associated with the next American president, we wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to Donald Trump and encourage him to change his course.

Donald, for the sake of the children (ours included), we are asking you stop and smell the roses. Forget fascism, it’s passé. Forget racist rhetoric, it’s easy fodder for memes and trolls. Forget fumbling through foreign and domestic policy issues you don’t really understand, it’s a lot safer to yell at the TV. Forget building a wall, just raise the roof at one of Melania’s cool parties.

The presidential election really isn’t the same thing as Survivor; and while it’s been entertaining to watch, it really is time to get off the island. Think of all the other fun things you could be doing instead of making a mockery of the greatest democracy in history and ruining the world’s confidence in the greatest economy on the planet?

Look, you’ll always have a home on reality TV; and you’ll always be that crazy uncle to millions of followers on Twitter. We just think the time is right for you to get back in touch with your softer side, drop out of the race to become leader of the free world, and save humanity in the process. That would be yuuuuge!

Sincerely, your neighbours to the North,
Rob and Anna Bucciarelli”
