Couple Visits A Shelter To Donate, Leaves With A 17-Year-Old Dog
Rocky, a 17-year-old stray dog, has been in and out in a shelter since 2012. His golden years didn’t seem promising until a young couple arrived at his shelter. They went there to donate but then they saw Rocky. The couple adopted him immediately.
“We were there to donate all kinds of stuff that I rounded up with my military community and I saw rocky walk in and I couldn’t stop thinking about that adorable old face,” Beth, Rocky’s human mom, told Bored Panda. “Next thing I know I’m walking out with Rocky!”
Rocky was in bad shape the first few days but after a bath and finding some good joint and health medicine to put him on we found his personality was sparky and fun. He sings and dances with us and love to follow wherever we go. Rocky knows his age but he still pushes his limits to all kind of thing, his spirit is absolutely amazing!
Rocky may have had some bad years but I made a promise to him however long he may be here will be filled with joy and love and lots of treats. He defiantly brought a missing puzzle piece into our life and we are more than happy to be his parents.”

“I took you on knowing we were going to have to take extra care of you”
“I knew one day I was going to have to carry you up the stairs when you no longer have the strength to do it”
“I knew you were going to…lose your hearing and eyesight and we were going to have to spend extra money to make the house safer for you”
“I knew one day I am going to have to say goodbye to you”
“But until then you are the best gift I have ever gotten and I’m really sad I couldn’t give you the best 17 years you deserved”
“I promise you’ll have a great life from now to the day I have to say goodbye!”

“I took you on knowing we were going to have to take extra care of you. Knowing that one day you weren’t going to make it outside in time to use the restroom and I would have to clean it up, I knew one day I was going to have to carry you up the stairs when you no longer have the strength to do it. I knew you were going to eventually lose your hearing and eyesight and we were going to have to spend extra money to make the house safer for you. I knew one day I am going to have to say goodbye to you. But until then you are the best gift I have ever gotten and I’m really sad I couldn’t give you the best 17 years you deserved but I promise you’ll have a great life from now to the day I have to say goodbye!”
Thank you, Beth, for talking to Bored Panda about your wonderful story!

Share on FacebookI want to tell Beth and her husband you are the most WONDERFUL people! I wish more people would adopt senior animals and give them the love and compassion that they deserve! For being a young couple you are very wise in your years! Be very proud of yourselves! You are one in many that understands what the word RESPECT means in this world now a days! Thank you for being YOU!
I wish more folks would take older pets...including cats. They weren't born in a shelter and are often very confused...and they make wonderful pets. I found an old cat who was dying, arthritic, teeth rotting, skinny, covered with fleas and allergic to them. I took him home, good vet visit, 5 teeth pulled and some anti bi's and he had the best 3.5 year retirement he could have had. Clung to me like an old coat.
I cant read English perfectly. but the letter makes me cry. angels met angel! thank you!
That's OK. Your heart read the letter for you :-)

Bless your hearts! There is nothing more heartbreaking to me than to see an elderly pet dumped at a shelter, and nothing makes me more ANGRY! Every time I see one, I swear I can imagine SO distinctly what that poor animal must be feeling. So frightened, abandoned, absolutely heartbroken and shattered. Do people really NOT know what they are to that animal??? I cannot even comprehend of what is missing inside a person to just walk away from that animal that they have had for years and not even bat an eye! YOU are that animals ENTIRE WORLD!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! A million times thank you! To ALL of the people that adopt an elderly animal. May you truly be blessed! I know for sure you will be blessed by the love and gratitude that the pet will heap upon you!
mAY the good Lord bless you many times over for taking this sweet old dog home to love out the rest of its life with you. Be gentle, be loving, be caring. These are the sweetest times of life between you and your pet. <3 Enjoy every day!
Load More Replies...thank you so much for caring for rocky, you are a truly amazing couple! I had my morgan for 17 years. she was a lot like rocky from the sounds of it. caring for a senior dog is not easy but believe me they appreciate everything you do for them. the last year I had to carry morgan up and down the stairs. many times I was shampooing the carpets every other day when she didn't realize what was happening. it was sometimes frustrating but when they look in your eyes and thank you for the help its all worth it. your helping rocky to keep his dignity, which at that age is huge. they will let you know when its time but cherish every moment till then, senior dogs are the best dogs!

We went to a shelter for a medium-sized, senior, female dog as a companion for our older male Husky?malamute mix. We came home with a 2 year-old, MALE, XL, Weimaraner - when the dog s right, the dog is right. He is still her 8 years later and I couldn't love him any more than I do. We love all our dogs and they were the perfect fit at the time - even they were not what we expected! COngratulations to all of you! There is no love like the love of an old dog.
So very happy for Rocky. thanks to his new mom and dad for taking him home after making their donations to the animals at the shelter.

You guys are my kind of people. Your letter brought tears to my eyes. Tell Rocky I have a girl for him. Her name is "Sandy" and their just about the same age. Remember all good dogs go to Heaven . . . and so do their owners.

Yeah, we've got one of them 17 year old elderly kids. Deaf, blind in one eye and neurological problem with his hind legs but shows no sign of slowing down. Told the vet he might just make 20. He is loved! And, I've got his back right to the end.
Proof positive that the 'younger' generation is not self-absorbed or uncaring. Thank you both for saving this sweet soul. My two senior rescues have been a joy, and I receive much more from them in the way of happiness than I could ever give :)
There isn't a better dog to adopt.Thank you for showing the unconditional love the Pup was looking for.

Thank you so much for your kindness and compassion, you've just made my day :-)
Your gift to the this boy has come back 100 fold! THANK YOU BOTH, you are amazing. I adore my 14 year old!
That is so beautiful what you did for Rocky. I wish there were more people like you in this world....????
I always have two dogs & my oldest is almost 13, a German Shepherd I found emaciated in a parking lot; he was about 9 or 10 months old. A big rig trucker said a car pulled in and pushed him from the car & took off. The dog was too scared to go to the trucker but jumped right in my station wagon. I'm a "young" healthy 70 but because I doubt if I'll live to be over 90, I decided my next dog will be the oldest dog in our local shelter. All my dogs have been either strays or rescues from shelters. Please realize that every time someone buys a dog from a pet shop (think puppy mills) or even a reputable breeder, a dog in a shelter is put to death. There are breed specific rescues if you really want a specific breed. Please adopt; do not buy. Do not enable breeders of any kind to continue to bring more puppies into this world when 1.2 million dogs are put to death just in U.S. shelters each year, not to mention the many more million who are neglected, starved, abused & murdered.
I'm a young healthy 70, but my youngest dog is only 5 years old, adopted when my Rottweiler died at age 15. She is from the Humane Society of the Bahamas, a Bahamian Potcake, med small (to me) 60 or so lbs & my other dog is a 12 year old German Shepherd I found as an emaciated 9 or 10 month old pup. I had already decided that because of my age I would only adopt senior dogs. We feel horrible grief when one of our dogs die but our dogs suffer many times the grief when we die because while they are a big part of our world, we are their whole world, with the exception of their fellow pets. To be old & in some pain is bad enough but to be an old dog or cat suffering the pains that come with old age & have no home and no one who loves you is unbearable.
That is the best adoption story I've ever heard, what a beautiful story.
Aww what a wonderful love filled story. I am soo soo glad you adopted him. He is so handsome and i know he's so happy now. I hope and pray he can be around for years. Maybe with all this love he is now getting it will make all the difference. Thank you God bless you all.
You have made my heart sing this morning Beth.......thanks I needed that.
So glad you walked in the shelter that day and left with a furbaby. Senior dogs deserve to have loving homes just as much as younger dogs. I hope you have a few more wonderful years left with each other. Much love to all of you.
